A woman staying at a rental near the Port Hueneme Historical Society Museum in Port Hueneme called me one evening. She was visiting from out of state, had one smart key for her 2012 Highlander, and the push-to-start just stopped responding. Dash read "Key Not Detected." I got there in about an hour. Opened the HYQ14AAB housing and found the CR1632 was dead flat, which explained the range failure. But holding a dead fob to the start button should still trigger the backup start on these. I plugged into the OBD-II port and pulled codes. The immobilizer module on the smart key ECU, part number 89990-48163, had dropped communication with the fob's H-chip transponder. A new battery alone was not going to fix the registration glitch.

I wrote a fresh HYQ14AAB fob to her vehicle using the Toyota H protocol, cut the emergency insert blade in the van, and tested every function. Lock, unlock, hatch release, panic, handle touch sensors on all four doors, and push-to-start from multiple positions.

She just sat on the porch watching the whole thing. Quiet relief. No tow, no waiting room, no lost vacation day. Done for a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
