A woman staying at an Airbnb rental in South Surfside, Port Hueneme called me on a weeknight with a situation that had been getting worse all afternoon. Her only fob had stopped waking the car. The door handles weren't responding to touch. The push-button start wasn't seeing anything. So we moved to a replacement. I connected to the OBD port, ran the registration process, and wrote a new fob to the car. Cut the emergency insert blade in the van. Walked every button, tested door handle touch unlock on both front doors, confirmed the start button was reading the new fob from normal carry distance, and did a full lock cycle.
She had a working key inside of an hour, standing in the driveway of a rental she hadn't planned on being stuck at. The dealer comparison barely came up. She just wanted to move her car and get on with her trip.
