2004 Toyota Highlander Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out past Santa Barbara, near Gaviota State Park, a guy was camping with his 2004 Highlander and managed to lose his only key somewhere between the beach trail and his tent. No spare. No nearby dealer. Barely any cell signal until he walked up to the camp host station.
When I got out there, I already knew what this job was going to look like. The 2004 Highlander uses the older Toyota 4C fixed-code transponder system. All-keys-lost on these means you cannot just plug into OBD and run a registration sequence the way you would on a newer Toyota. The immobilizer ECU, the 89780-series module behind the dash, holds the key data on a 93C56 EEPROM chip. I used my ACDP Mini to read that chip, backed up the data, and wrote in the new key information.
Then I cut a new TOY43 blade to code on my Condor, dropped in a 4C transponder chip, and tested the start. Engine fired on the first turn. No drama.
He was sitting in a camp chair watching the whole thing like it was a weird magic show. When it started, he just said "huh" and nodded.
The dealer would have needed a tow, probably 45 minutes each way, plus whatever wait time they had that week. He drove out of that campground on his own schedule instead.
