2006 Toyota Highlander Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out near Refugio State Beach in Santa Barbara, a woman flagged me down in the day-use lot. Not a call-ahead. She saw the van, read the side, and walked over while I was finishing paperwork from another job.
Her 2006 Highlander had one key. The rubber on the head was cracking and the TOY44D blade was worn smooth on one side. She had been meaning to get a spare for two years. She asked the dealer once and they quoted her a parts-and-labor breakdown that made her put it off again.
I grabbed a 4D-67 chip blank and set up the IM608 on her OBD-II port. The 2006 Highlander uses Toyota's older immobilizer protocol, so the tool reads the transponder ECU, pulls the encryption seed, and registers the new chip. No EEPROM pull needed when you have a working key present. Cut the blade on my Condor, tested the mechanical turn in the ignition and both doors, then confirmed the immobilizer accepted the new transponder by starting the engine twice.
The whole thing took about 20 minutes. She stood there watching the waves the entire time, which is a pretty good way to wait for a car key.
She paid a fraction of what the dealer wanted, got both keys back in her hand, and drove off toward the 101 without having to schedule anything.
