2023 Toyota Highlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Coal Oil Point Reserve in Goleta gets foggy. The kind that rolls in thick around sunset. A property manager called me out because her 2023 Highlander wouldn't recognize the smart key.
She'd already tried the fresh battery trick. Still got "Key not detected" every time she hit the push-start. The remote buttons worked fine - lock, unlock, hatch, panic all responded. Just couldn't start the car.
I checked the HYQ14FLA fob first. The CR2032 was new but the positive contact spring had flattened out from years of battery swaps. Common issue on this generation. I bent it back for better contact, then went through the relearn procedure on my Autel.
That's when the real problem showed up. Error code B279A - "Smart ECU malfunction." The smart key module wasn't talking to the main ECU. I traced it to a loose connection at the module under the dash, probably jarred from our California roads. Reseated the connector, cleared codes, and the system came back online.
She asked what the dealer would've done. Same fix, but they'd want the car towed in, keep it overnight for diagnosis, then order parts that weren't needed. We had her running in 45 minutes right there in her driveway.
