I was parked near the shops in Downtown Ojai when the call came in. A woman walking back from a yoga class had her 2015 Highlander sitting in the lot, showing her a key-not-detected warning and refusing to let her touch-unlock the driver door. Passenger handle still worked. Fob buttons still worked. But that driver-side door handle just sat there dead.
She had already called the Toyota dealer. They told her to bring it in, possibly overnight, and quoted her a price for diagnosing the smart key system and potentially replacing the fob. She figured that was where this was going.
I walked over and we started simple. Pulled the fob apart, looked at the CR1632 sitting inside. Original battery. Contacts had a faint film on them from years of pocket heat and humidity. Cleaned the contacts, dropped in a fresh CR1632, seated it flat. Then I walked both door handles, front and back, checking the touch sensors.
Driver front came right back. The handle sensor was getting just enough signal from the weak battery to sometimes work, but not reliably. With a clean battery seated correctly, all four functions on the fob checked out and the handle recognized the fob approach every time.
No new fob. No dealer visit. No overnight wait. Handled it in the parking lot while she finished her coffee. She saved a good chunk compared to where that dealer conversation was heading.
