A woman near Bart's Books in Ojai had been fighting her 2015 Highlander ignition for weeks. Some mornings the key turned fine. Other mornings she sat in the lot wiggling it for five minutes, late for everything.
The dealer told her the whole cylinder needed replacing. New cylinder, new keys, full reprogram.
I pulled the cylinder and checked the wafers. Half of them were worn down and riding loose, which is textbook TOY43 ignition wear on these third-gen Highlanders. The lock was not dead. It just had tired internals.
Before touching anything mechanical, I connected my ACDP to back up the immobilizer data off the 93C56 EEPROM on the ID box, part number 89784-08030. That way if something goes sideways during the teardown, I have the security data saved. It took about two minutes.
I decoded the lock, swapped the worn wafers for fresh ones matched to the original cuts, and cut a new key to the repaired cylinder. Her HYQ14FBA synced back through OBD with no issues. Tested all four buttons, proximity unlock on both front handles, push-button start in every gear position.
She said the key hadn't gone in that smooth since the car was new.
The dealer wanted to replace parts that were not broken. I replaced what was actually worn, on site, for a fraction of what they quoted.
