A guy came back from a week out of town, walked across the cell phone lot at the airport, and his 2020 Highlander sat there completely dark. No response to the fob. Doors locked. He remembered, maybe a second too late, that the emergency blade was somewhere inside his checked bag. Which was sitting in the trunk.
He called the dealer. Thursday was the earliest they could see him. It was Tuesday afternoon.

Getting into the car was the first step. Once I had the door open, I connected to the OBD port and ran a diagnostic read. His fob was still enrolled and recognized by the system. Nothing had dropped out of memory. The issue was exactly what it looked like from the outside: a CR1632 that had finally given up, probably somewhere over Nevada on the flight home.
Swapped the battery, seated it correctly, verified the fob registration was intact, and walked every button and both door handles. Touch unlock, start button response, all of it. Everything came back clean.
He drove home that afternoon. The dealer visit, the tow they quoted him, the two days of waiting around. None of that happened. He left the parking space his car had been sitting in all week, just a lot later than he planned.
I put a spare CR1632 in the glovebox before I packed up. Small thing. He appreciated it.
