Got a call from a woman near Goleta Beach Park in Santa Barbara. Her 2007 Highlander Limited was sitting in a lot and the dash kept showing "Key not detected." She said she had already gone through two CR1632 batteries thinking that was it.
When I pulled up, she was holding the fob against the start button to get the engine going, which is the emergency backup method Toyota built in. It worked, but the push-to-start wouldn't recognize the key from her pocket anymore. No touch unlock on the door handles either.
I opened up the HYQ14AAB and the battery was fine, seated correctly, good voltage. So I connected my programmer through OBD and pulled diagnostics on the Smart Key system. The fob's registration had dropped. This happens on these XU40 Highlanders when the Smart Key ECU loses sync, sometimes after a dead battery event or a jump start. Toyota TSB TS-003-07 actually covers communication faults between the certification ECU and the key, and the fix is re-registration.
I re-registered her existing fob, confirmed the second antenna (the one in the rear hatch area) was picking up too, and walked all four doors testing the touch sensors. Everything came back.
She thought she needed a new fob. She didn't. Just needed the existing one re-paired on site, for a fraction of what the dealer quoted her over the phone.
