2022 Toyota Highlander
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How fast can you get to my location in Isla Vista or Goleta?

Depends on the day and where I am on the road when you call. I give you a real window on the phone, not a guess. Because I'm already mobile and working in the area, I can usually reach Goleta and Isla Vista faster than a tow truck could be arranged and the car hauled anywhere.

Q: Can I get a replacement smart key made today?

Usually yes. I stock fob shells, cut blades, and carry the programming equipment for the 2022 Highlander in the service vehicle. If the schedule allows, same-day service in Goleta and Isla Vista is the normal situation, not the exception. Call first, confirm availability, and we go from there. Dealers in the area often can't match that because they may need to order parts, schedule multiple days out, or require a drop-off.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2022 Highlander. Can you still make a replacement without any working key?

Yes. All-keys-lost on the 2022 Highlander is a job I do regularly. It requires a diagnostic connection to the vehicle's port to clear the existing key registrations and enroll the new fob fresh. The process takes a bit longer than a standard add-a-key because the system needs to be reset before anything new can be paired.

Q: My 2022 Highlander is showing a key-not-detected warning but the fob battery is fine. What's going on?

That warning can show up for a few different reasons that have nothing to do with a dead battery. The smart key system reads the fob through antennas placed around the cabin and door handles. If something is interfering with that signal, like certain phone cases, a wallet, or even thick key pouches sitting right next to the fob, the car can lose the read momentarily.

2022 Toyota Highlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a woman in Isla Vista who was trying to get a spare made for her 2022 Highlander before her daughter started using it. Simple enough job on paper.

What she mentioned almost as an aside was that she'd been to the dealer first. They told her it would be a few days out for an appointment, they'd need the car for a couple of hours, and the price made her pause. A friend pointed her toward me.

I pulled into the lot she gave me, found the Highlander, and she walked out with both fobs from her original set. I added the new smart key through the diagnostic port, verified the factory fob on the door handles and the start button, then tested the new one the same way. Both doors, both handles, both fobs. Everything confirmed before I packed up.

She was back inside in under an hour. No freeway trip, no waiting room, no leaving the car. The dealer comparison didn't even come up again. She'd already made the call she needed to make.

Toyota Highlander Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does a 2022 Toyota Highlander smart key replacement take?▼

On site, you're looking at roughly 30 to 45 minutes for an add-a-key. The smart key system on the 2022 Highlander requires a diagnostic connection to register the new fob, and there's a built-in process the system runs through before it confirms enrollment. It's not instant, but it's not a half-day job either. All-keys-lost takes a little longer because the system has to be cleared before new fobs can be registered.
