2019 Toyota Highlander Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A guy near the Ojai Valley Trail flagged me down, basically. He called while I was already in Ojai finishing another job. His 2019 Highlander XLE had one working smart key left, and his kid had lost the other one somewhere between school and soccer practice the day before.
He had already called the Toyota dealer. They quoted him a wait of five to seven business days for the fob to come in, then a scheduled appointment on top of that. He did not have that kind of time with one key floating around out there.
I met him in the parking area off the trail. Pulled the VIN, confirmed his Highlander's smart key ECU was the 89990-0E031 module, and got to work through the OBD-II port under the dash. The VVDI Key Tool generated the correct DST-AES transponder data onto a blank HYQ14FBA board (271451-6520). Cut the emergency insert blade on the spot.
Then the part that matters: I erased the lost fob from the system entirely. Registered both the original and the new one fresh. Tested lock, unlock, panic, hatch release, push-to-start, and walked every door handle for proximity detection.
He watched the whole thing from about two feet away. When the engine turned over on the new fob, he just nodded and said "that's it?" That was it. Took about 35 minutes, cost him a fraction of what the dealer wanted, and his kid's lost key was dead to the car.
