A guy in Oak View had just picked up a used 2017 Highlander and got handed a single smart key at the handoff. The fob looked okay on the outside, worked well enough at the dealership lot during the test drive, and he figured a spare could wait.
About three weeks later it started getting weird. The driver door handle stopped responding to his touch consistently. Sometimes it would unlock, sometimes nothing. He started double-tapping. The positive contact had a slight outward bend, the kind you get when someone pops the case with a screwdriver instead of the right tool. The battery was making intermittent contact, not no contact, which explained why the fob worked sometimes and failed other times.
I straightened the contact, seated a fresh CR1632 the right way, and went through the whole check: door handle touch unlock on both sides, lock button, the remaining buttons, and confirming the dash saw the key cleanly. Every function came back.
He didn't need a new fob, didn't need a dealer diagnostic, didn't need a tow. Just a bent contact and a fresh battery, diagnosed on site in his driveway.
