A guy in the Downtown Ojai area had just picked up a used 2017 Highlander Limited off Craigslist. Good car, fair price, one smart key. The seller handed him the single HYQ14FBA fob with a worn button pad and told him to get a spare on his own. He figured a hardware store could sort it out.

The immobilizer talks to the fob's transponder through the Smart Key ECU (part of the 89990-series board), and without that coded handshake, the engine will not crank. He called the dealer. I met him at his place and ran the add-a-key procedure through OBD using my diagnostic setup. The system accepted the new HYQ14FBA, I cut the emergency insert blade on a TOY48 profile, and tested all four buttons plus the passive entry on both front handles and the hatch. Took about 25 minutes.
He drove away with two working smart keys for a fraction of what the dealer wanted for one. And that second key means something else: if he ever loses one, the next replacement stays an add-a-key job instead of an all-keys-lost scenario, which is a completely different level of time and cost.
