A woman at her apartment off the Patterson Road corridor in Oxnard had her only key to her 2001 Highlander crack at the housing. The blade snapped clean off in the driver door lock. Half stuck in the cylinder, the fob shell in her other hand. Zero working keys and a car she could not open.
I pulled the blade fragment out of the lock and decoded the wafers. The 4C transponder chip inside the cracked housing was still intact, which was the good news. I used my VVDI2 to read the chip code directly from the damaged key, no need to pull the immobilizer ECU or mess with the 93C56 EEPROM. Cut two fresh TOY43 blades, transplanted the original chip and HYQ12BAN circuit board into a new 3-button shell, and programmed the second key as a spare.
She stood on the sidewalk watching and kept turning the rebuilt key over in her hand like she was checking if it was really hers. Same buttons, same chip, new shell. Two working keys in about 40 minutes.
If your key is broken but you still have the pieces, bring them. The chip inside a cracked fob is usually fine and keeps the job faster and cheaper than a full all-keys-lost reset.
