A woman in the Sea Air neighborhood in Oxnard called me on a Tuesday morning with a situation that had gone from bad to worse overnight.
She'd bought the Highlander used with one key. One. Kept meaning to get a spare cut, never got around to it. Then the fob shell cracked at the top corner, which she taped up and kept using. Then the blade snapped. Half of it stayed in the door lock cylinder, the other half was still in her hand attached to the cracked fob housing.

I got the blade fragment out of the cylinder first. Then I decoded the lock to get the cut, which meant I didn't have to guess or wait on a key code lookup. The transponder chip inside the cracked fob housing was still intact, which was the lucky part of an otherwise rough morning. I transferred the board into a new shell, cut two fresh blades to match the lock, and ran the remote through a resync so both the lock and unlock functions were confirmed working before I packed up.
Forty minutes, start to finish. Two keys instead of one.
She said the dealer had quoted her a number she wasn't ready for, and that was before they even looked at the fragment stuck in the lock. That part alone would've been a separate charge on their end.
If your only key is already showing cracks or the blade has any wobble at the bow, get a spare made now. The broken-key version of this job is still doable, but it's easier when there's a whole key to work from.
