A woman in the Mira Monte area of Ojai called me about her 2018 Highlander. The fob shell had split along the seam and the rubber button pad was worn down to the point where two of the four buttons barely registered. She had already been to the dealer. They told her she needed a full replacement key, quoted her accordingly, and said to expect a couple of days turnaround.
She called me instead.
When I got to her cul-de-sac, I asked to see the fob before assuming anything. The cracking pattern on the housing was familiar - the seam near the battery cover is a weak point on these, especially on keys that live on a heavy ring. I popped it open carefully, checked the circuit board for corrosion and the battery contacts for bend or oxidation. Everything inside was solid. The electronics were completely functional.
The fix was a shell swap. New housing, fresh button pad, the original board and battery transferred over, and a properly seated CR1632 to finish it. Then I walked every button, tested the door handle touch unlock on both front handles, and confirmed the start function read correctly before I called it done.
She saved a good chunk compared to what the dealer wanted for a full replacement, because the part that makes the key actually work was never broken. The dealer's quote assumed otherwise. Sometimes the most useful thing I bring to a driveway is the willingness to check before replacing.
