2016 Chevrolet Colorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on the 2016 Colorado?

The key blade is what physically turns the ignition cylinder, but inside the plastic head of the key there's a small chip. When you turn the key, a coil mounted around the ignition barrel reads that chip. If the chip code matches what the immobilizer is expecting, the engine starts. If it doesn't match, the security system blocks the start. There's no battery in the key, no buttons, no remote entry.

Q: Why does dealer key programming take so long on a Chevrolet?

A few things stack up. Parts availability is the first one. If your blank isn't in stock, you're waiting on an order. Then there's the service bay scheduling. Then the programming itself, which on GM vehicles can include timed security relearn cycles built into the procedure. Those aren't optional and they can't be skipped. Dealers also have other vehicles ahead of yours in line. None of that changes the actual programming time, which is short.

Q: My 2016 Colorado security light is flashing and the truck won't start. Is the key the problem?

A flashing or steady security light after a turn-key attempt usually means the immobilizer didn't get a valid read from the transponder chip. That can mean a few things: the key wasn't programmed, the programming didn't take correctly, or the chip in an older key is damaged or failing. A worn key that's been on a heavy keychain for years can develop chip issues even if the blade still turns fine.

Q: Can I get a spare key made for my 2016 Colorado if I only have one key left?

Yes, and you should. One key on a transponder vehicle is a bad position to be in. If that key fails or gets lost, you're into an all-keys-lost situation, which takes longer and costs more than a simple spare job. With at least one working key present, adding a second is a clean, fast process. I can cut the new blank to match your existing key and enroll the transponder chip to your truck's immobilizer in one visit.

2016 Chevrolet Colorado Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy in the Wilson neighborhood of Oxnard reached me on a Tuesday morning. He had one key left for his 2016 Colorado and it was worn to the point where the cut was getting shallow. He'd already had one no-start at a gas station, got it to crank on the second try, and knew he was on borrowed time. He wanted a spare before he got stranded.

He didn't want to go to the dealer. He'd called them first and got quoted a wait time measured in days because they'd have to order the blank. That part I understood. The key blade blank isn't something every dealer keeps a stack of.

I came to him. He was at his place in Wilson, truck sitting in the driveway. I pulled the blank, cut it to his vehicle using the existing working key for reference, and enrolled the new transponder through the OBD port. The whole thing was done before he had to be anywhere.

He tested both keys himself, back to back, cold starts both times. The worn original still worked, barely. The new one fired right up clean. He kept both.

Dealer comparison didn't even come up until he asked what they would have charged. When I told him to call them and compare, he just laughed and went inside.

Chevrolet Colorado Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How long does the Chevrolet dealer take for a 2016 Colorado key replacement?▼

Longer than the actual work takes, almost always. The hands-on programming time is short, but dealers often have to order the key blank if it's not sitting on a shelf, and that alone can push the job out several days. Then you're booking a service bay appointment on top of that. Owners report being told to come back later in the week just to get started. I come to your vehicle. No ordering wait, no appointment queue, no drop-off.
