2015 Chevrolet Colorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long does the key programming actually take on a 2015 Colorado?

If you have one working key and just need a spare added, figure around 15 to 20 minutes once I'm connected to the vehicle. The system accepts the new transponder data relatively quickly in that scenario. All-keys-lost is different. This generation has a security access timer built into the process. The module won't accept new key registration until that timer runs out, and you can't bypass it.

Q: Can you get to me faster than a dealer can?

For most people in the Wagon Wheel area, yes, by a wide margin. The dealer process on a lost or damaged transponder key involves scheduling, potentially sourcing the blank, shop labor time, and in some cases a tow if the vehicle won't start. Several Colorado owners on GM forums have reported waiting days, not hours, to get a second key cut when the dealer had to order the blank.

Q: I bought a replacement key blank online. Can you just program it, or is there a problem with that?

It depends on the blank. This is a real issue on the 2015 Colorado. The key has to be the correct profile for the lock cylinder and it has to carry the right transponder chip inside the head. A lot of blanks sold online are listed as compatible but come with the wrong chip or a chip that doesn't meet the signal requirements for this generation's immobilizer.

Q: My 2015 Colorado starts fine with one key but the truck hesitates or acts odd sometimes. Could that be a key or transponder issue?

It can be. Worn transponder keys are a real thing on trucks this age. The chip is embedded in the key head, and if the head has cracks, has been exposed to a lot of heat, or just has ten years of wear on it, the transponder read can get intermittent. The immobilizer reads the chip every start cycle, and a weak or inconsistent signal can cause hesitation, a no-start, or a warning on the dash.

2015 Chevrolet Colorado Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy out near the Wagon Wheel area of Oxnard texted me on a Saturday morning. He'd been out hiking the hills north of town, key was in his shorts pocket, and somewhere between the trailhead and the switchback he lost it. Not misplaced. Gone. He got back to his 2015 Colorado and had nothing.

No dealer was going to help him on a Saturday without a tow and an appointment. He found me and dropped his pin.

I drove out with the right key blank and my programmer already loaded for his truck. When you do all-keys-lost on this generation, the security system makes you wait through a timed cycle before it accepts the new transponder data. You can't skip it, can't rush it. I explained that to him while we stood in the parking area. He just nodded. He'd been on the trail all morning. Waiting another few minutes wasn't the hard part of his day.

The key came out of the programmer, I cut it to the lock profile, turned the ignition, and it fired. He drove home from that lot the same way he drove in.

He mentioned what the dealer quoted him the last time he needed key work. What I charged was a fraction of that, and I came to him.

Chevrolet Colorado Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What if I need a key made after hours or on the weekend?▼

Call me. Chevy dealer service departments keep regular business hours, and weekends are hit or miss. OnStar can help you get into a locked vehicle or arrange a tow, but it cannot make you a working key or handle the immobilizer enrollment on your behalf. The actual key work still waits until a dealer tech is at a bay with the right equipment. I work evenings and weekends in Wagon Wheel and the surrounding Oxnard area.
