2006 Chevrolet Colorado
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a "remote" key on the 2006 Colorado, and how does it work?

The 2006 Colorado actually uses two separate pieces. The ignition key has a transponder chip inside the head that communicates with the vehicle security system every time you start the truck. The keyless entry fob is a separate unit with 3 buttons and its own CR2032 battery. They handle different jobs. The ignition key has to be programmed to the vehicle or the engine won't run. The fob handles remote lock and unlock independently.

Q: What equipment do you use to program a 2006 Colorado key?

For a 2006 Colorado, the transponder learn runs through the OBD port using GM-capable programming tools. The security relearn on this generation has a timed cycle built in, so the process takes a few minutes to complete. It's not a long procedure, but it does require the right equipment and software to talk to the vehicle security system correctly. We carry the tools that cover this generation. No guessing, no substitutions.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2006 Colorado. Can I program it myself?

For the keyless entry fob on a 2006 Colorado, there is an onboard programming sequence that some owners have had success with. It involves a specific sequence of ignition cycling and door lock inputs within a timed window. It doesn't always work on the first try, and if the procedure doesn't complete correctly you may need to start over or wait before attempting again. The ignition key is a different story.

Q: My 2006 Colorado starts fine but the fob stopped working. Is the fob dead or is something wrong with the truck?

Start with the CR2032. Weak cells lose range before they die completely, so the fob might work at six inches and do nothing at six feet. Swap the battery, check that the contacts aren't bent, and test again at normal range. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, the fob itself may have failed. These older remotes are durable but the buttons and internal contacts wear out over time.

2006 Chevrolet Colorado Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call out to Wilson in Oxnard on a weekday afternoon. A guy's 2006 Colorado key had snapped clean off in the ignition.

Half the blade was still sitting in the cylinder and the other half was in his hand. He'd already tried to fish it out with a thin piece of wire, which I've seen make things worse, but he stopped himself before he got too far in. Smart call.

I pulled the broken fragment with an extractor without touching the wafers. Then I decoded the lock so the new key would match exactly, cut a fresh blade on site, and ran the transponder learn through the OBD port. One security cycle later, the truck started on the first turn.

He'd already called the dealer before reaching me. They told him it would be a tow, a wait for parts, and a multi-day turnaround. He saved a good chunk coming my way, and he was back on the road in under an hour from when he first called.

A broken key in a parking lot feels like a full-day disaster. On a 2006 Colorado, it's one of the cleaner jobs I do.

Chevrolet Colorado Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake locksmith before I get taken advantage of?▼

Three things to watch for: they won't give you a firm total on the phone for your specific vehicle, they show up without the right tools to actually program a GM key, and the price jumps once they're already in your driveway. Real warning sign: any locksmith who quotes one number and then starts adding line items after the work starts. Programming surcharge, "security access fee," key chip fee listed separately.
