2004 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Can you delete a lost or stolen key for my 2004 Chevrolet Express so it no longer works?

Not the way you might be thinking. This van uses a mechanical key with no electronic enrollment, so there is no system to wipe a lost key from. The key either fits the lock or it doesn't. If you've lost a key and want to make sure it can't be used, the real move is rekeying the door and ignition cylinders. That means new lock tumblers cut to a different key code, and your old key won't turn anything.

Q: Does my 2004 Chevrolet Express have a hidden emergency blade inside the fob?

No. The 2004 Express does not use a fob at all. It came with a plain metal key. There is no remote, no housing, and no hidden blade to release. You just have the key itself. If you're looking for a spare, a locksmith cuts one directly from your existing key or by decoding the lock. That's the whole job.

Q: My 2004 Express key turns hard in the ignition and sometimes doesn't come out. Is the key worn or is it the cylinder?

Usually both. On high-mileage vans like the Express, the ignition cylinder wears alongside the key. A worn key can start cutting wrong grooves into an already tired cylinder. The first thing to try is a freshly cut key made from the key code, not copied from the worn one. Copying a worn key just duplicates the damage. If a fresh-cut key still binds or sticks, the cylinder itself may need replacing.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key for my Express without me having the original?

Yes. Two ways to do it. First option is decoding a lock cylinder directly, reading the cuts from the door lock or the ignition. Second option is tracing the key code through the VIN, which gives the original factory cut specification. Either way, you end up with a correctly cut key made to the actual lock, not a guess. No original key required.

2004 Chevrolet Express Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A guy waved me down near the Botanic Garden Area on a Tuesday morning. He had a 2004 Chevrolet Express and one key that was worn down to the point where it would start the van maybe half the time. He'd been babying it for months.

He told me he'd called the dealer first. They told him to bring the van in, leave it for the day, and they'd look into it. He didn't want to leave his work van at a dealer for a day over a key.

I pulled up, decoded the lock right there in the parking lot, and cut him a fresh key on my portable machine. Then I cut a second one so he'd have a proper spare for the first time in years. He tested both in the ignition and both in the door. Everything worked.

The dealer visit never happened. He was back on the road in under twenty minutes, and he paid a fraction of what they would have charged just to walk in the door.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to handle all-keys-lost on my 2004 Chevrolet Express?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. On this van, all-keys-lost is not the complicated procedure it is on newer vehicles. The 2004 Express uses a standard metal key, so the job is cutting a new key to fit your locks. A locksmith can decode the lock cylinder on site or look up the key code and cut a replacement without towing the van anywhere. Dealers will often ask you to bring it in and charge accordingly.
