Got a call from a guy near Surfers Point in Ventura. He ran a catering van, a 2020 Chevrolet Express 2500. Said his key had been catching in the ignition for weeks. Some days it turned fine, other days he sat there wiggling it back and forth for five minutes before the cylinder would rotate. Morning rush, coolers loaded, engine would not start. That kind of day.
He already called the dealer. They wanted him to tow it in and quoted a full ignition cylinder replacement with new keys and a reprogram through the body control module. He did not love that plan.
I met him in the parking lot. Pulled the key out and looked at the wear on the cuts. Then I checked the cylinder. Classic wafer fatigue. The B-keyway setup on these Express vans uses individual brass wafers inside the lock, and once a few of them get sloppy, the key binds instead of turning clean.
I backed up the BCM data with my programmer first, just in case. Then I decoded the existing lock, swapped the worn wafers, and cut a fresh Strattec 5928818 blank to match the repaired cylinder. Tested the transponder relearn through OBD-II, confirmed the Philips 46 chip was recognized, and ran the passlock security cycle. Key turned smooth. Engine fired right up.
He watched me pull the old wafers out and hold them next to the new ones. The difference was obvious. He did not need a new cylinder. Just the parts that actually wore out.
