2010 Chevrolet Express Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Saturday night, somewhere around 9pm, I get a call from a couple at the bowling alley near the Westlake Village area in Thousand Oaks. Their 2010 Chevrolet Express would not start. Key turned, engine cranked for a second, then nothing. Dash lit up with "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the security light stayed solid.
They had one key. It was worn down pretty bad. The plastic head had a hairline crack running right through the transponder housing, and I could see the PK3 chip was barely seated inside. That is enough to kill the signal to the theft deterrent module.
I had B111-PT blanks in the van already. Cut a fresh blade on my Condor XC-Mini, cloned the PK3 transponder using my VVDI Key Tool, and had a working key in the ignition in about 20 minutes. Engine fired on the first turn. No relearn procedure needed because the clone reads identical to the original.
The husband kept looking at the old key like he could not believe that little crack was the whole problem. His wife was already on the phone canceling the tow truck she had started to arrange.
They had been ready to leave the van in the parking lot until Monday, then sit at the dealer and wait. Instead they drove home Saturday night. When the right blank is already in the drawer, a weekend call is no different from a weekday one.
