My key shell is cracking apart. Can you replace it without reprogramming the whole key?

As long as the chip is intact, it can be transferred into a new shell and the programming carries over with it. No relearn needed, no dealer visit. What exactly is a transponder key and why does the 2014 Express use one?

A transponder key looks like a regular metal key, but there's a small chip embedded in the plastic head. When you turn it in the ignition, a coil ring around the cylinder energizes that chip and reads a code. If the code matches what the immobilizer has on file, the van starts. If it doesn't match, or if the chip isn't there at all, the engine won't run even if the key is cut perfectly.

The Express has been using this system for a long time. It's a commercial van, often carrying valuable tools or cargo, so the theft deterrent layer matters. A correctly cut key with no chip, or a chip that was never programmed, will crank the engine and immediately kill it, or do nothing at all. Programming has to happen before the key is useful. I do that on site.

My Express is showing a security warning on the dash. What does that mean and what should I do?

If neither key works, some older GM van owners have had luck with a timed ignition relearn. Turn the key to the run position without cranking, watch the security light, and wait for it to go out, which can take around ten minutes. Then cycle the key off, wait a moment, and try to start. This doesn't fix an underlying problem, but it can reset a confused security system long enough to get moving.

If the warning keeps coming back, the root cause is usually a worn ignition cylinder that's not reading the chip reliably, a key that needs to be re-cut or re-programmed, or occasionally a body control module issue. That last one is less common on these vans but worth ruling out if the simpler fixes don't hold.

I need a second key made for my Express. Can that be done without going to a dealer?

Yes. Adding a second transponder key to a 2014 Express is a standard mobile job. I bring the programmer to you, cut the new key blade to your van, and enroll the transponder on site. If you're all-keys-lost, it takes a little longer because the security system needs to be accessed differently, but it's still doable without a dealer.

Having a spare key for a work van isn't optional, it's just risk management. One key means one bad morning away from a stranded vehicle and a missed job.

Check whether the security light stays on after the stall. If it does, that confirms the immobilizer is involved. A worn cylinder is a common culprit on Express vans with a lot of miles, since the read coil and cylinder wear together over time.
