2000 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: Do I need to tow my Express to the dealer if I have no working key?

No. The dealer will tell you to tow it in, but that's not your only option. We come to the vehicle wherever it's sitting - a driveway in Rose Park, a parking lot, wherever. Since this is a mechanical key, the work happens at the lock or the ignition cylinder, not through a diagnostic port. We cut the key on site and you're done. Save the tow money.

Q: How long does it take to get a replacement key made for the 2000 Express?

Quick job. Decoding the lock and cutting a replacement key typically runs well under an hour start to finish, and most of that is travel and setup. There's no programming wait, no security relearn countdown. Once the key is cut and verified in the lock and the ignition, you're good to go.

Q: Can I get a spare key made from my existing key, or do you need to decode the lock?

Either way works. If you hand me your current key, I can duplicate it directly on the machine - takes just a few minutes. If your existing key is worn down from years of use, duplicating a worn key just makes another worn key, and eventually it stops working reliably. In that case, decoding the lock or pulling the original key code gives you a fresh cut that matches the actual lock, not the worn copy.

Q: My key turns hard in the ignition. Do I need a new ignition cylinder or just a new key?

Start with the key. On a van this age, the ignition wafers wear over time and a key that's seen a lot of use can get sloppy. Sometimes the fix is a freshly cut key made to the correct depth specifications rather than the worn profile you've been using for years. If a new cut doesn't smooth it out, then the cylinder itself may need attention - but that's a separate conversation. Most of the time, worn key first.

2000 Chevrolet Express Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Got a call from a guy in Rose Park, Oxnard. He was over visiting family for a few days and somewhere between unloading the van and hauling stuff inside, his only key for the 2000 Express went missing. Not lost-in-the-couch missing. Gone.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him he'd need to tow it in. He wasn't thrilled about that, especially since the van was parked in a residential driveway and he needed it back by the next morning.

I pulled up, took a look at the door lock, and got to work decoding it right there. Cut the replacement key on my machine in the van, tried it in the door, tried it in the ignition. Turned over on the first try.

He kept waiting for me to pull out a laptop or some programming tool. When I told him we were done, he looked at the key, then at me, then back at the key. "That's it?" That's it. The dealer route would have meant a tow bill on top of whatever they charged for the key itself. This was done in the driveway, faster than he expected, and he was back on his way before lunch.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

I lost all my keys to my 2000 Chevrolet Express. Can you still make one?▼

Yes, and it's one of the simpler all-keys-lost situations we handle. The 2000 Express uses a mechanical key, so there's no immobilizer relearn, no security timer, and no module to access. We decode the lock cylinder or use the key code on file to cut a working key on site. No tow required. You can be back in the van the same day.
