2006 Chevrolet Express MECHANICAL-KEY Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
Out in Dos Vientos Community Park, a guy flagged me down in the parking area near the community center. He had a 2006 Chevrolet Express cargo van and a story that made my eye twitch.
Another locksmith had come out, cut a new key, and told him the body control module was bad when the engine cranked for two seconds and quit. Classic Passlock symptom. The other tech left.
The BCM was fine. I checked the Passlock status with my IM608 through the OBD-II port. The previous tech had cut a decent key but never ran the security relearn. On Passlock II, the system does not care about the key itself. It reads a resistance value from a Hall-effect sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder housing. If nobody tells the BCM to accept that reading, the engine cranks, fires, and the BCM shuts the fuel injectors down. Every time.
I verified the B102 cut with my Lishi, confirmed it turned the cylinder cleanly, then ran the GM Passlock relearn: ignition on, wait for the security light to stop flashing (about 10 minutes), cycle off, repeat two more times. Three cycles, roughly 30 minutes of sitting there watching a dashboard light blink.
After the third cycle the security lamp stayed off. Fired right up, stayed running. I let it idle for a few minutes just to be sure.
He had already paid the first locksmith for a job that was never finished. I could not fix that part. But the van ran.
