2011 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a transponder key and why does my Express need one?

Your 2011 Express key looks like a plain metal key but has a small chip sealed inside the plastic head. When you turn the ignition, the vehicle reads that chip. If the chip is not recognized, the engine will not run, or it will crank and immediately shut back down. There are no buttons on this key. No remote lock, no unlock, no fob battery to replace. It is strictly a turn-key ignition setup.

Q: What tools do you use to program a key for a 2011 Chevrolet Express?

Professional GM-capable diagnostic equipment connected through the OBD port. For a van this age the process involves running the immobilizer programming sequence to register the new transponder chip. It is not a phone-app job or a YouTube button-sequence trick. That said, this generation of GM van is not one of the newer vehicles that requires factory-level security credentials or gateway bypass tools. A well-equipped mobile locksmith with the right software handles it on-site without a dealer visit.

Q: I had a spare key made at a hardware store and it turns the ignition but the van will not start. What is going on?

That is the classic transponder problem. The hardware store duplicated the cut of the blade, but they cannot program the chip inside the key head. So the cylinder turns because the cut is right, but the immobilizer does not recognize the chip and kills the start. Some owners notice the security light flashes or stays solid when this happens. The fix is programming, not re-cutting. If the blade fits and turns smoothly, the cut is already correct.

Q: Can I program a second key myself so I have a spare on hand?

Some older GM vehicles have an onboard relearn sequence where you can add a spare key using two working keys and a timed ignition procedure. Whether that sequence applies to your specific Express depends on how the van is configured and what keys you already have on hand. If you are starting from scratch with no working key, that kind of self-relearn is not an option regardless.

2011 Chevrolet Express Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

She had just left urgent care with her kid and was parked near the Conejo Oaks area of Thousand Oaks. The Express would not start. She turned the key, nothing. The security light stayed on solid. She called the dealer, got a voicemail. Then she called me.

I was about 20 minutes out. When I pulled up she was sitting in the driver seat still turning the key like it was going to change its mind. The van had a transponder key that had been through some things, worn down at the bow, and I could see the chip housing inside the plastic head had a small crack from what looked like a keychain with too much weight on it. A cracked housing does not always mean a dead chip, but it is not a good sign.

I cut a new key blade to match the vehicle and programmed a fresh transponder to the van's immobilizer on-site. The whole thing took about 40 minutes in the parking lot. She made it to the pharmacy with time to spare.

The dealer would have been a next-day appointment at best, and she would have needed a tow since the van was not moving. Sometimes the math is just that simple.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

How do I spot a fake or shady locksmith before I get burned?▼

Three things to watch for. First, they refuse to give you a firm total price for your specific vehicle over the phone. Second, they show up and either cannot program the key or stall until you feel stuck. Third, they tack on surprise fees once they are already in your driveway and the job is half done. Real stories from owners: quoted one price, then hit with a separate "programming surcharge" that doubled the total.
