Out near Lake Casitas Recreation Area in Ventura, a woman flagged me down at a picnic pullout. Not literally, she had called earlier, but she was standing next to her 2018 Express cargo van waving like she wanted to make sure I did not drive past.

Her van had been starting fine for about a week after another locksmith cut her a replacement key. Then one evening the dash lit up with "Service Theft Deterrent System" and the engine cranked, caught for two seconds, and died. Classic fuel cutoff from a failed immobilizer check. By morning it would start again. By evening, same thing. She thought it was a fuel pump.

It was the chip. I pulled her key apart and read the transponder with my VVDI2. The other tech had used a generic ID46 clone, but it was the wrong variant. The 2018 Express needs the PCF7936 programmed to GM's specific rolling-code protocol. A close chip passes the first few security checks, then the BCM catches on and locks the injectors out. That is why it worked for a week before going bad.

I cut a new NI04-PT blade, loaded the correct ID46 profile, and ran the on-board programming through the OBD port. Three 10-minute relearn cycles, about 33 minutes of waiting, and the van fired clean.

She also had a weak battery in her remote fob causing intermittent lock and unlock failures, so I swapped that while the relearn timer was running. Two problems fixed, one trip, a fraction of what the dealer wanted.
