2024 Chevrolet Express
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2024 Chevrolet Express use, and how does it work?

The Express uses a remote key setup. You get a separate fob for door locks and a conventional blade key that turns in the ignition to start the van. The fob and the ignition function independently. Losing the fob doesn't mean you can't start the van, and a dead fob battery doesn't strand you. What it does mean is you're doing everything manually until you get the fob sorted.

Q: My Chevrolet dash is showing a security or theft deterrent warning. What does that actually mean?

That warning means the vehicle security system is not recognizing the key the way it should. First thing to try is your spare key if you have one. If the spare works cleanly, your primary key or its transponder is the issue. If neither key is being recognized, you may be looking at a worn ignition cylinder that's not reading the key correctly, or a deeper module communication issue.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online. Will it work if I just put a battery in it?

No. A fob that hasn't been programmed to your van is just plastic with a battery in it. It won't lock or unlock anything. The fob has to be paired to your specific vehicle using diagnostic equipment before it functions. Buying the part yourself is fine and can save money on the hardware side, but you still need someone with the right tools to finish the job. Bring the fob and I'll do the programming on site.

Q: Can I add a second fob to my 2024 Express, or does adding one wipe out the existing key?

You can add a second fob, and on most setups like this one the existing fob stays active. The process writes the new fob into the system alongside what's already there rather than replacing it. That said, the way the job gets done matters. If a technician runs a full erase-and-relearn sequence instead of an add-a-key procedure, any fobs not present during that session get dropped from the system.

2024 Chevrolet Express Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

North Ventura, early morning. A guy calls me from a marina parking lot just west of the neighborhood. He runs a small boat charter out of the area and uses his 2024 Express as the work van for hauling gear, coolers, and crew. He'd watched one of my GM key replacement videos months before, saved my number, and called the morning the fob started acting up.

His issue was range. The fob would work fine if he was right at the door, but from ten feet away, nothing. He figured it was just an old battery, swapped it himself, and the range came back for about two days. Then it got worse again.

When I got there, I opened the fob on the hood so he could see the whole thing. The battery was seated, but the contact had a slight inward bend from being pried open with a flathead instead of a proper tool. Every time a new CR2032 went in, it made contact for a day or two and then lost it as the battery shifted slightly. The contact spring wasn't clamping down the way it should.

Small bend-back on the contact, clean the terminals, fresh CR2032 seated correctly. Then I walked every button, tested range from the length of the van and then from across the lot, and locked and unlocked a few times to confirm it held.

He didn't need a new fob. He didn't need programming. He needed that small fix done right, on site, before his morning trip. That's the call, and that's the job.

Chevrolet Express Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

My fob shell is cracking around the key ring loop. Can you swap the shell without reprogramming everything?▼

Yes. The circuit board inside the fob is what holds the programming, not the plastic housing. If the board is intact and undamaged, you can transfer it into a replacement shell and the fob will work exactly the same way without touching the programming at all. The key ring loop area is one of the most common crack points on these work-van fobs because they get clipped to lanyards and gear rings and take constant stress.
