Got a call from a guy out near North Ranch Open Space in Thousand Oaks. His 2005 Express cargo van would not start. Cranked for half a second, quit, and the security light went solid on the dash. He had already been through it with another locksmith who showed up, cut a new key, and left when it didn't fix anything. Because it was never about the key.
The Express that year runs GM's Passlock II. No chip in the key at all. The security is a sensor inside the ignition lock cylinder, part number 15822350 on these vans. When that sensor starts failing, it sends the wrong resistance value to the BCM and the fuel gets disabled. Classic symptom: brief crank, then nothing, security light stays lit.
I pulled the lower column cover, checked the wiring at the Passlock sensor connector, and found the issue. The resistance reading was bouncing around instead of holding steady. Swapped the lock cylinder assembly, ran the relearn through the BCM so the new sensor's resistance value got stored, and the van fired right up.
He had his toolboxes in the back, whole mobile plumbing setup. Dead van meant a dead workday. He was back on the road in under an hour. The dealer had quoted him a tow-in plus a multi-day wait. He just needed someone who knew that Passlock II is a lock cylinder problem, not a key problem.
