Got a call from a guy out near Corriganville Movie Ranch in Simi Valley. His 1999 Astro van had been sitting for a few months, and when he went to start it, the key turned but the engine would crank and die immediately. Classic VATS lockout behavior.
He had already tried a spare key. Same thing. Then he wiggled the key around, tried it a few more times, and triggered the four-minute lockout. By the time he called me, he was on his third lockout cycle and pretty frustrated.
I drove out there and checked the key first. The resistor pellet on the blade was worn and had some grime packed into the contacts. That tiny pellet has to read a specific resistance, one of 15 values, through two thin wires in the steering column. Any corrosion or wear on either end and the reading drifts out of tolerance.
Cleaned the pellet contacts on both keys, tested resistance with my meter, and confirmed they were still reading within spec for the correct value. Turned the key. Fired right up.
The column-side contacts can also wear out on these, especially vans that have had decades of use. His were still good. I told him if the problem comes back, I can bypass the VATS module with a resistor inline, which is a common permanent fix on these older GM platforms. He was happy just having the van running again without a tow truck involved.
