1999 Chevrolet Astro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 1999 Chevrolet Astro use?

A straight mechanical key. No remote, no fob, no transponder chip. It turns in the ignition cylinder and operates the door locks the old-fashioned way. Replacement means cutting a new key to match your vehicle, either by pulling the key code or decoding one of the locks directly. That's the whole job.

Q: How does a locksmith compare to the dealer for a 1999 Astro key?

For a mechanical key like this, the dealer doesn't have a strong argument. They'd look up the key code, cut a key, and hand it to you, same as a locksmith. The difference is you'd be driving there, waiting in a service queue, and paying shop rates for a job that takes minutes. I come to you in Santa Susana Knolls, decode or cut on site, and you're done. No appointment, no tow, no waiting room.

Q: I have my original key but the ignition is getting hard to turn. Is that a key problem or something else?

Probably the ignition cylinder, not the key itself. The 1999 Astro is old enough that the ignition wafers inside the cylinder wear down over time, and a worn cylinder can start to feel sticky or stiff even with the original key. In some cases it gets bad enough that the key turns hard or stops turning cleanly at all.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key if I have zero keys left for the Astro?

Yes. All-keys-lost on a 1999 Astro is about as clean as it gets for this kind of job. With no chip or programming involved, the path forward is decoding a door lock or the ignition cylinder to pull the key cut, then cutting a new key to that code. No donor key needed, no diagnostic equipment, no tow to a dealer. I carry the equipment to do that on site in Santa Susana Knolls.

1999 Chevrolet Astro Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from a guy up in Santa Susana Knolls on a Tuesday afternoon. His 1999 Astro had been sitting in the driveway for three days because he'd lost his only key somewhere in the house and gave up looking. His wife had already called a dealer and was told to tow it in. He wasn't thrilled about that plan.

I told him I could come to him, decode the lock, and cut a key right there in the driveway.

When I got there, the van was parked tight against the garage. No room to complain, plenty of room to work. I decoded the door lock, confirmed the cut, and had a working key in his hand faster than the tow truck would have shown up. He tried it in the ignition, turned it over on the first try, and that was it.

He asked me twice if I needed to plug anything into the car. I said no. He seemed more relieved about that than anything else.

His wife had been quoted a tow plus a dealer service visit. What they actually needed was a key cut to the vehicle, done on site, for a fraction of what they were bracing for.

Chevrolet Astro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why does key replacement cost so much for some Chevrolets?▼

It depends heavily on the year. Newer Chevrolets with transponder keys, smart keys, or push-button start systems require programming equipment, security procedures, and sometimes subscription-based dealer tools to register a new key. That overhead adds up fast, and dealers pass all of it on to you. Your 1999 Astro doesn't have any of that. It's a mechanical key, so the job is cutting metal to match your locks. No programming, no security relearn cycles, no diagnostic port work.
