Out by the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in Simi Valley, a guy called me from the parking area off Madera Road. His 1997 Chevrolet Astro had a snapped key, half the blade stuck in the ignition cylinder and the other half in his hand.
He said he almost tried pliers. Glad he didn't.
I got there and used my B106 Lishi to slide the broken fragment out without bending any wafers. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded the lock right there on the column. The Astro uses a VATS resistor pellet system, not a transponder, so the next step was measuring the resistance value off the broken original with my ohm meter. It read as VATS key number 6.
Cut a new B106 blank with the correct pellet, test-fit the doors and ignition, turned the key. The VATS module accepted the resistance match on the first try and the 4.3L fired right up. No relearn timer, no OBD programming. Just the right pellet value and a clean cut.
He stood there watching the whole thing, still holding the broken half like a souvenir. Told me he'd been on his way home from the library tour and thought he was going to need a tow truck and a week at the dealer. The whole job took maybe 25 minutes from when I pulled up.
