Out on the Tapo Canyon Road corridor in Simi Valley, a woman flagged me down from a gas station payphone. Her 1996 Astro van was sitting at the pump with the key snapped off in the ignition. Half the blade was still jammed in the cylinder.
She had two kids in the back seat and groceries going warm. The key had been getting harder to turn for weeks. She said she'd been twisting it with both hands lately just to get it to fire. That night it finally gave up.
I got the broken piece extracted with a hook pick and a steady hand. The ignition cylinder wafers were worn down to almost nothing, which is textbook for these 90s GM columns. Part number D1493F for the lock cylinder assembly. I had a replacement on the van.
Pulled the old cylinder, dropped in the new one, cut a fresh B44P key to match, and tested it through every position: accessory, run, start. Smooth the whole way.
The whole thing took about 35 minutes. She had called around first and one shop told her to tow it in and leave it overnight. That would have meant unloading the kids, the groceries, figuring out a ride. Instead she drove home before the ice cream melted.
Sometimes it's just a worn-out lock cylinder on a van that's been turning the same key for 200,000 miles.
