1998 Chevrolet Astro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How long will a replacement key last?

A properly cut metal key on a van this age should last as long as you own it, assuming reasonable use. The cylinder is the variable. On a 1998 Astro with original locks, years of wear mean the cylinder tolerances are looser than they were new. A well-cut key handles that fine.

Q: What if the new key stops working after a few weeks?

Call me and I come back. That is the whole policy. If a key I cut develops a fit issue or stops operating the lock or ignition under normal use, I make it right. On a vehicle this age, the more likely culprit for a sudden problem is the cylinder, not the key - but I will diagnose it either way. I test the key in every lock before I leave the job.

Q: My Astro ignition is getting hard to turn. Is that a key problem or a cylinder problem?

Usually the cylinder. By 1998, a lot of these vans had put on serious mileage, and the ignition cylinder wears with use. A worn cylinder can get stiff, start requiring a jiggle to turn, or in some cases get to the point where it won't release the key cleanly. If a new cut key is still stiff, the cylinder itself may need attention - either a rekey or a replacement cylinder. I can evaluate that on site.

Q: Can a locksmith make a key if I have absolutely no key to copy from?

Yes. That is a standard job on a vehicle like this. I decode the cut from the lock directly - usually the door lock or the ignition cylinder - and cut a new key to those specs without needing an original. No copy needed. Simi Hills, a parking lot, a body shop lot, wherever the van is sitting is where I work.

1998 Chevrolet Astro Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A body shop out in Simi Hills called me about an Astro that had been sitting in their lot for a few days. Owner had lost his only key. The shop needed the van moved and the owner needed to get back on the road.

No fob, no remote, no electronics to wrestle with. Just a van with a lock and no key to open it.

I got into it through the door lock, then decoded the cut right off the lock cylinder. Cut a new key blade on the spot, tested it in the door, tested it in the ignition. Turned over first try. The whole thing took maybe twenty minutes once I was on site.

The body shop guys were half expecting me to pull out a laptop and start plugging into things. I told them this one was simpler than that. A key cut to the vehicle, done on site, same day. The owner had been quoted a multi-day wait through another channel. He picked up a working van before lunch.

Chevrolet Astro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do you use OEM or aftermarket keys on Chevrolet vehicles?▼

On a 1998 Astro, the key is a metal blade, so the distinction matters a lot less than it does on newer vehicles with chips and fobs. What counts is the key blank fitting the correct keyway for this van and the cuts being accurate. We use quality blanks that match the factory keyway profile. A bad blank that doesn't fit the keyway correctly will feel wrong in the lock and can accelerate wear on an already-aged cylinder.
