2000 Chevrolet Astro
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a remote key and how does it work on the 2000 Astro?

On the 2000 Astro, the remote and the ignition key are two separate pieces. The ignition key is a metal key cut to your vehicle that you turn to start it. The remote is the separate fob that controls the door locks and the other buttons wirelessly. The fob uses a CR2032 battery and transmits to the van's receiver when you press a button. If the remote stops working, your van still starts fine with the ignition key.

Q: How long does dealer key replacement take on a 2000 Chevrolet Astro?

Longer than it needs to be, usually. For a vehicle this age, the actual work is not complicated, but dealers tend to book it into a full service slot. Owners have reported sitting at the dealership for over an hour for a job that runs well under thirty minutes of real hands-on time. On top of that, if the part has to be ordered, you're waiting days and then making a second trip.

Q: The fob on my 2000 Astro works sometimes and not others. What's going on?

Intermittent behavior on these older GM remotes is almost always one of three things: a weak battery that tests okay but drops under load, a cracked solder joint on the board from years of being dropped or sat on, or a bent battery contact that loses connection when the fob flexes. The 2000 Astro fob is over two decades old at this point, so none of those are surprising. Start with a fresh CR2032 seated firmly.

Q: I bought a replacement fob online for my 2000 Astro. Can I sync it myself?

Some 2000 Astro owners have had luck with an onboard sync sequence using the door lock switch and ignition, but results vary depending on the van's configuration and whether the receiver module is cooperating that day. It is not a guaranteed self-service process. If the sequence doesn't take, you need someone with the right equipment to push it through. Also worth knowing: even if you get the remote synced, the key blade still needs to be cut to your ignition.

2000 Chevrolet Astro Remote Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Windsor North, a guy had been locking his 2000 Chevrolet Astro by hand for about three weeks. Key in the door, old school. The remote just stopped working one day and he figured he'd deal with it eventually. Eventually turned into a damp January morning when he realized he was doing this every single day, twice a day, with a van full of tools.

He called me before calling the dealer, which I appreciated. Some people come to me after the dealer quote. He came first.

I pulled into his street and he handed me the fob. CR2032 inside was reading low on my tester, but even after swapping it the range was patchy. Lock worked from six feet. Unlock didn't. That inconsistency usually points to the board, not the battery.

I had a replacement remote with me. Cut the key blade to match his ignition, synced the remote to the van right there at the curb, and walked every button. Lock, unlock, and the other two functions. All four responding clean.

He watched the whole thing from his driveway. Took about twenty minutes. He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a number that made him set the phone down. He saved a solid chunk going this route, and he didn't have to leave Windsor North to do it.

Chevrolet Astro Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement remote for my 2000 Astro?▼

Not at all. A mobile locksmith with the right GM tooling can cut the key and sync the remote right where your van is parked. The 2000 Astro is old enough that the remote pairing process does not require factory software access or dealer-only credentials. A properly equipped locksmith handles it in one visit. The dealer is an option, not the only option, and the wait time at a shop is usually longer than the job itself takes.
