Near The Collection in Oxnard, a guy called me about his 2005 Chevrolet Astro with half a key sticking out of the ignition cylinder. The other half was in his hand. He'd already called another locksmith who told him the cylinder was done, needed to be drilled out and replaced entirely. He said the quote was painful. He called me for a second opinion.
I got there and looked at the break. The fragment was seated pretty shallow, which actually works in your favor. I worked it out with an extractor, slow and careful, keeping the wafer surfaces completely untouched. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it right there, reading each wafer position to get the exact cut depths for a new blade.
I cut the replacement key from the decode on the spot. Tested it in the ignition, tested it in the door. Turned clean both ways on the first try.
He asked what I would have done if the fragment had been deeper. I told him the approach changes a little but the goal stays the same: get it out without wrecking the cylinder. Drilling is a last resort, not a first move.
He drove away from The Collection with a working key and an intact lock. The original cylinder is still in the van, exactly the way it came from the factory.
