No reprogramming, no relearn sequence, no dealer visit.

The shells on these do crack. The key ring loop area and the base of the head near the blade are the two spots that go first. If yours is held together with tape or a rubber band right now, it's worth fixing before the chip gets damaged or the blade snaps off in the ignition. That's a much worse day.

What exactly is a transponder key and how does it work on the 2003 Venture?

On the 2003 Venture, the Buttons field is N/A and the Battery field is N/A, which means this is a straight transponder turn-key with no remote functions built in. The dash is showing a theft deterrent warning and the van won't start. What should I check first?

Second, the ignition cylinder. These wore heavily on the Venture by this age. A worn wafer inside the cylinder can cause the chip coil to misalign just enough to drop the signal, but only sometimes.

Third, if both the key and cylinder check out clean, the fault moves upstream to the security module or the coil ring around the cylinder. That's less common but it happens.

The way to sort it is to start with a known-good key read on a programmer. If the key looks solid, swap the cylinder before assuming anything more expensive is wrong.
