2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How much more does all-keys-lost cost compared to just adding a spare?

More. Always more. When you have a working key, adding a spare is quick. I clone or program alongside the existing key, verify both work, and that's the job. When all keys are gone, the immobilizer needs a full reset. That takes longer, requires specific equipment, and the procedure itself has steps that can't be skipped or rushed. The price reflects that extra work.

Q: Do aftermarket transponder keys actually work on a 2003 Silhouette, or should I insist on OEM?

Aftermarket keys for this vehicle are widely available and the chip technology on a van this age is well understood. The tooling to program them has been around for years. I use quality aftermarket keys on these regularly and they work correctly. What matters more than OEM versus aftermarket is whether the key was cut accurately and programmed properly.

Q: The security light on my Silhouette stays on after I start it. Is that a key programming problem?

It can be. On this van, the security light should come on briefly when you turn the key, then go out once the immobilizer recognizes the transponder. If it stays lit after the engine starts, the most common causes are a key that was cut at a hardware store without programming, a key whose registration has dropped out, or a fault in the immobilizer circuit itself.

Q: I have a key that physically turns the ignition on my Silhouette but the engine won't crank. What's going on?

Almost certainly a transponder issue. This is the classic symptom when someone gets a key cut at a hardware store or a generic locksmith who only cut the blade and skipped programming. The key operates the cylinder because the blade cut is correct. But the immobilizer never sees a valid chip signal, so it blocks the starter.

2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I was out in Casitas Springs on a Tuesday morning, parked off the main stretch near one of the older ranching properties. The owner had a 2003 Silhouette and a problem a lot of people create for themselves by accident: he had one key, it broke off at the bow, and the blade was still in the ignition cylinder.

That's two problems at once. Extract the broken blade without damaging the cylinder, then make a new key from nothing.

He'd already called the dealer. They told him the van would have to be towed in, which felt wrong to him, so he looked for another option. Smart call.

I pulled the broken blade with a pick and extractor set while he watched over my shoulder asking good questions. Once the cylinder was clear, I decoded it on the spot, cut a fresh blade on the portable machine, and ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port because there was no working key left to reference. The immobilizer accepted the new key after the sequence completed. Turned the ignition, security light went through its normal cycle and went off. Engine came up clean.

He asked if he should get a second key made while I was there. Yes. Always yes. The second key cost him a fraction of what the first one did because the hard part was already done. He drove to work that afternoon. The dealer tow never happened.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a key for a 2003 Oldsmobile Silhouette?▼

Call a mobile locksmith before you call the dealer. The dealer has overhead, a service lane, and a parts department markup built into everything they do. A transponder key replacement on this van through them is a significant spend, and they'll likely want the vehicle brought in. With EZ Car Keyz, I come to you in Casitas Springs or anywhere in the Ventura area, cut the key on site, program it on site, and you drive away.
