2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What is a transponder key and why does it need programming?

The blade is only half the job. A transponder key has a chip embedded in the plastic head that sends a signal to the vehicle's immobilizer when you turn the ignition. If the chip isn't recognized, the van cranks and immediately dies. It won't run. The chip has to be programmed to match your specific vehicle before it does anything useful. Cutting the blade gets you into the door and lets the ignition cylinder turn.

Q: Why does the dealer charge so much for a replacement key on a 2001 Silhouette?

It's a system problem, not a complexity problem. The dealer's parts department orders the blank, the service department schedules the programming, and you're paying for all of that overhead plus the tow if you don't have a working key to drive there. The job itself isn't especially involved on a vehicle this age. We carry the blank, the cutting machine, and the programming tools in the van. We come to your driveway in Thille/Montalvo or wherever the Silhouette is sitting.

Q: My 2001 Silhouette starts and immediately stalls. Could it be a key problem?

Yes, and it's one of the more common things I see on vehicles from this era with transponder keys. If the chip in your key isn't communicating properly with the immobilizer, the van will crank and fire for a second, then cut out. It's doing exactly what it's designed to do when it doesn't recognize the key. Before assuming it's a fuel or ignition issue, try the other key if you have one.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2001 Silhouette. Can you still make a replacement?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a normal job on this vehicle. We don't need an existing working key to get you back on the road. We cut a new key to the vehicle and program the transponder chip through the OBD port on site. The old lost keys get cleared out of the system in the process, so they can't be used to start the van if someone finds them. Figure about 30 to 45 minutes start to finish.

2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Out in Thille/Montalvo, I got a call about a 2001 Silhouette that wouldn't go anywhere. The owner had a key that fit the door and turned the ignition, but the van would crank and die every time. Classic sign that the key blade was right but the chip hadn't been programmed to the vehicle.

She had bought a replacement blank from a parts store, had someone cut it, and assumed that was the whole job. Totally reasonable assumption if nobody told you otherwise. The blade worked fine. The ignition tumbler had no complaints. But the van was doing what it's supposed to do when it sees an unrecognized chip: let you crank, then shut it back down.

I pulled up to her driveway, connected to the OBD port, and ran the programming sequence on site. No tow, no wait, no appointment. The whole job from pulling up to handing her a working key was under 45 minutes.

She mentioned the dealer had quoted her a multi-day turnaround and a number that made her stomach drop. What I charged her was a fraction of that. She'd already spent money on the blank and the cut before she called me, so she was extra relieved it didn't cost another dealer-sized bill on top of that.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 2001 Oldsmobile Silhouette key have remote buttons?▼

No. The key for this vehicle is a transponder key with no remote built in. No lock button, no unlock button, nothing like that. It's a chip key that goes into the ignition, and that's the whole package. If you need door locks, you're using the manual lock or a separate key fob that operates independently from the ignition key. When we cut and program your replacement, you get a working key that starts the van.
