1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: How do I know if my 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette key has the transponder chip in it?

Look at the head of the key. A basic mechanical key has a thin, flat metal head, usually all metal or simple plastic. A transponder key has a thicker plastic head, often black, that houses the chip inside. On the 1999 Silhouette, the factory key came with that thicker plastic head.

Q: How much does a replacement transponder key for a 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette cost through EZ Car Keyz compared to the dealer?

The dealer will quote you a number that includes ordering, labor, and their usual timeline measured in business days. With us, you get the key cut and programmed on-site in Downtown Oxnard for way less, with no waiting around. Call for the exact number, but the price on the phone is the price you pay. No surprise fees, no trip charge tacked on at the end.

Q: Can I program a transponder key for a 1999 Silhouette myself at home?

These late-nineties GM transponder systems do have an onboard relearn sequence that can work if you still have at least one working, already-programmed key. The general process involves using the existing key to put the system into learn mode, then introducing the new key. But if you're in an all-keys-lost situation, that sequence won't work and you'll need someone with a programming tool connected to the OBD port.

Q: My 1999 Silhouette cranks but won't stay running. Could this be a transponder problem?

Yes, that's actually a textbook symptom when the immobilizer sees the key but doesn't fully accept it. Engine fires, runs for a second or two, then shuts off. It's the system doing exactly what it's supposed to do when it's not happy with the key signal. Before assuming it's a fuel or ignition issue, check whether the key you're using was properly programmed or if it was cut somewhere that didn't handle the chip side of things.

1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette Transponder Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

I got a call from someone parked near the farmer's market area in Downtown Oxnard. 1999 Silhouette, wouldn't start. Owner had already been through the usual frustration: tried the spare, called the dealer, got a timeline that didn't work for her week.

The dealer's story was the usual one. Order the key to VIN, takes a few days, come back when it's here. She had kids to get places. That wasn't going to work.

I pulled up with the blank on hand and cut it right there on the portable machine. Then came the part that actually matters with these: programming through the OBD port. The transponder in these late-nineties GM minivans needs to be enrolled to the vehicle's immobilizer, and you can't skip that step no matter how good the cut is. Once it was done, she turned the key and it started clean, no hesitation.

She asked me how long the dealer would have actually taken if she had gone that route. I told her honestly: probably what they said, maybe longer if the blank was on backorder. She just nodded and went about her afternoon.

The whole thing was done in under forty-five minutes in her parking spot. She paid a fraction of what the dealer quoted and never had to leave Downtown Oxnard.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Does the 1999 Oldsmobile Silhouette key have a fob or remote attached?▼

No. The 1999 Silhouette uses a standalone transponder key with no remote, no fob, and no battery to replace. It's a metal key with a chip molded into the head. Lock and unlock functions are handled separately, either by the door lock cylinder or a standalone keyless entry remote if the vehicle has one equipped. The key itself is purely for the ignition.
