Got a call from a guy in the RiverPark neighborhood in Oxnard. His 1999 Silhouette cranked but would not fire, and the SECURITY light on the dash was solid. He had already tried the ten-minute relearn cycle three times and nothing changed.
He told me the dealer wanted the van towed in and said it would be three to five days before they could look at it. He had his kids' stuff in the back, soccer bags and a stroller, and that van was not going anywhere on a flatbed if he could help it.
When I got there I checked the ignition cylinder first. The PassLock sensor wire harness on these vans gets brittle right where it feeds into the column. His had a small crack in the insulation, just enough to throw off the resistance reading to the Body Control Module. The BCM sees the wrong value and kills the fuel injectors. Classic Silhouette problem.
I cut a fresh B97 key on my portable machine, addressed the wiring issue at the column, and ran the relearn procedure through the BCM. Three ten-minute key-on cycles with the engine off, then a quick start-stop to lock it in. The van fired right up.
He sat in the driver's seat for a second, turned it off, turned it back on, like he did not trust it yet. Then he just nodded. Done on site, same day, for a fraction of what the dealer route would have run him.
