1995 Oldsmobile Silhouette
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: All keys are lost on my Silhouette. Is that a harder job than making a spare?

A little more involved, but not dramatically so. When you have a working key, copying it is the fastest possible job. With all keys lost, a locksmith decodes one of your lock cylinders, usually the door lock or the ignition, to figure out the correct cut. That takes a few extra minutes and a bit more hands-on work, but on a mid-90s GM van with a mechanical key it is still a same-visit job.

Q: Do aftermarket keys work on a 1995 Silhouette, or do I need an OEM blank?

Quality key blanks cut to the right spec work fine on this van. The mechanical key system does not care about brand, only the cut profile and the metal quality. What matters is that the blank fits the keyway correctly and the cut is accurate. I use blanks verified to fit these GM locks so there is no slop in the cylinder and no binding on the ignition wafers.

Q: My 1995 Silhouette key turns in the ignition but the van is hard to start or the ignition feels stiff. Is the key worn out?

Possibly, and it is worth looking at both the key and the cylinder. After 30 years, the key blade itself can wear down from daily use, and the ignition cylinder wafers can wear or corrode independently. A worn key on a worn cylinder is a common combination on vehicles this age.

Q: Can I get a key made from the VIN, or does someone need to physically look at my van?

Both routes exist. On a 1995 GM vehicle, the key code can sometimes be retrieved through locksmith databases using the VIN, which means a key could be cut before I even arrive. That said, I always verify the cut works in the actual locks before calling the job done. On a van this age, cylinders can be replaced or re-keyed at some point in the last three decades, and the VIN code only reflects the original factory cut.

1995 Oldsmobile Silhouette Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman out in Poinsettia called on a Tuesday. Her 1995 Silhouette had been sitting in the driveway for a couple of weeks, and somewhere between the move and a garage cleanout, every key for it had disappeared. She had the title, she had the van, and she had absolutely nothing to put in the ignition.

She mentioned she had already called the dealer. They told her they would need to track down the original key code through GM records, and she should expect to wait and spend a good chunk of money to make it happen. She was not thrilled about either part of that.

I drove out, took a look at the ignition cylinder and the door lock, and decoded the cut right off the hardware. Cut the key blade on the spot, tried it in the door first, then the ignition. Turned over clean on the first try.

The whole thing took less time than finding parking at a dealership would have. She laughed at that when I said it, and then said she was going to get a spare cut immediately before the new one had a chance to disappear too. That is genuinely good advice on a 30-year-old van.

Oldsmobile Silhouette Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

What is the cheapest way to replace a lost key for a 1995 Oldsmobile Silhouette?▼

Call a mobile locksmith. This is a mechanical key, so there is no programming fee, no dealer computer required, and no module reset involved. It is a cutting job, full stop. A locksmith can decode your lock cylinder or source the key code and cut a working key on site. Way less than the dealer route, and you do not need to tow the van anywhere.
