Got a call from the Thousand Oaks Boulevard corridor on a Thursday afternoon. Guy had a 1998 Bravada sitting in a parking lot near the boulevard. Remote quit working, none of the four buttons did anything, and he thought the whole vehicle security system had locked him out.
Pulled up in about twenty minutes. Popped the KOBUT1BT fob open on the hood. The CR2032 was the original, and I mean original. Twenty-plus years of slow corrosion. The contacts on the circuit board had a green film on them that told the whole story. Battery was reading under two volts.
Cleaned the board contacts, dropped in a fresh CR2032, and reassembled. Then the part people never think about: you have to cycle all four buttons and verify range. Lock, unlock, panic, hatch release. Walked thirty feet away, tested again. Everything responded clean.
He kept pressing the lock button and listening for the chirp like he was making sure it was real. I get that. When something has been dead for a while and comes back, you want proof.
The whole thing took about fifteen minutes. He had been quoted a wait of several days at the dealer just to get the remote ordered and programmed. This was done on the spot for a fraction of that.
