Got a call from a guy near the Oxnard Performing Arts Center who was sitting in a 2001 S-10 that would crank but not turn over. He had already called a dealer. They told him the truck needed to be towed in, they would diagnose it, and he should expect the visit to run most of the next day. He was just trying to get home after a long shift.
I pulled up to the parking lot about forty minutes later. His key was worn down pretty badly. The B102 blade had lost enough definition on the cuts that it was barely catching inside the ignition lock cylinder. It would turn to accessory but wouldn't fully engage to crank. He had been forcing it for weeks, which is how the cylinder wear gets worse faster.
Cut a fresh B102 from code using the VIN. Slid it in, turned smooth, truck fired right up. The whole thing took about fifteen minutes including the drive.
He held up his old key next to the new one and just shook his head. You could see daylight between the cut depths. He had no idea a worn key could cause that much trouble on a truck with no electronics in the key at all.
