Got a call from a guy down at Fisherman's Wharf at the Harbor in Oxnard. He had just picked up a used 1999 S-10 from a small lot, single key, and the lot told him to get a spare on his own time.

He called a Chevy dealer first. They quoted him a trip to the parts counter, a wait for the lock cylinder code lookup, and a marked-up key. He also said the security light on the dash had been flickering on and off since he bought it, and the dealer wanted the truck towed in for diagnosis before they would even talk about cutting a spare.

I met him at the harbor parking area and explained the good news: a 1999 S-10 key is purely mechanical. No transponder chip, no programming, no diagnostic port work. The truck uses a Passlock sensor in the ignition lock cylinder that reads the lock itself, not anything in the key. His flickering security light was a known issue with the Passlock sensor wire harness at the cylinder, not a key problem at all.

I cut him a spare B102 blank right on the tailgate using measurements from his original. Tested it in the ignition and both doors. Turned over clean every time.

He stood there holding two keys, looking a little annoyed it was that simple after the dealer made it sound like a production. Sometimes the best part of this job is telling someone the fix is smaller than they feared.
