Got a call from a guy over in Centennial Plaza in Oxnard. He was at the lot where his 2002 Chevrolet S-10 had been sitting for a week while he was out of town. Key turned, engine cranked, but it wouldn't catch. Just churned and churned. The "Security" light on the dash was solid, not flashing.

He had already called around. Dealer told him earliest opening was two days out and he'd need to get the truck there. Tow quote on top of that. He found me and asked if I could just come to him.
I got there in about 40 minutes. Popped the lower dash cover and checked the Passlock sensor connector on the ignition lock cylinder. The wiring looked fine, no obvious breaks or corrosion. What happened was the Passlock II module lost its learned value, something that can happen if the battery went low while sitting. The body control module, part number 15773638 on these second-gen S-10s, holds the Passlock data.
I connected my diagnostic tool to the OBD-II port, ran the security relearn, and waited through the three 10-minute cycles. About 33 minutes of sitting there while the system reset itself. He leaned against the bed rail and scrolled his phone the whole time.
Truck fired right up after the relearn. He drove home that afternoon instead of waiting two days for a dealer slot.
