2000 Chevrolet S-10
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What kind of key does the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 actually use?

A plain metal key. No fob, no remote, no battery. It goes into the ignition cylinder and turns, same as keys have worked for decades. Replacement is a cutting job, not a programming job. If you have an existing key that's worn, a locksmith can decode the correct cut from your lock hardware and make you a fresh one that works cleanly.

Q: How long does a key replacement take compared to the dealer?

With me, usually 15 to 20 minutes once I'm at your location. The cutting itself is fast. Most of the time goes into decoding the lock if you don't have a working key to copy from, and that's still a short process. The dealer route on a straightforward metal key like this tends to stretch out simply because of how dealerships run.

Q: I only have a worn, barely-working key. Can you still make a good copy from it?

Don't copy a worn key directly. A copy made from a worn original will replicate the wear, and sometimes make it worse. What I do instead is decode the correct bitting off the lock cylinder itself, then cut a fresh key to the proper specification. That gives you a key that works like the original did when it was new, not like it does now after years of use.

Q: I lost all my keys to the S-10. Is all-keys-lost even fixable without a tow?

Yes. On a 2000 S-10 with a metal key, all-keys-lost doesn't require towing anywhere. I can decode the cut directly from the door lock cylinder without a working key present, cut a new key, and you're back in and running. It's one of the cleaner all-keys-lost jobs out there precisely because the solution is mechanical. I've done this in driveways in Rose Park and had the owner driving within the hour.

2000 Chevrolet S-10 Metal Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

A woman in Rose Park called me about her 2000 S-10. She'd lost her only key and the truck had been sitting in her driveway for two days. She told me she'd already called the Chevrolet dealer and they wanted her to tow it in before they'd even give her a price.

I pulled up to her place with my van and went straight to the door lock with a decoder. Took me a few minutes to read the cut right off the cylinder. Once I had the bitting, I cut a fresh key blade on the spot.

She watched the whole thing from her front step, arms crossed, clearly skeptical. Then I handed her the key, she walked over to the truck, and it turned over on the first try.

That was it. No tow, no waiting room, no ordering parts. She'd spent two days thinking this was a big ordeal. It took me less time than it took her to find my number.

Chevrolet S-10 Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Do I have to go to the Chevrolet dealer to get a replacement key for my 2000 S-10?▼

No. The 2000 S-10 takes a metal key cut to the vehicle, and a mobile locksmith can handle that on site. A dealer will cut from a key code too, but they'll want the truck there, they may need to order the blank, and you're looking at shop wait time on top of that.
