A guy from the Peach Hill side of Moorpark reached me on a Tuesday. His 2010 Aveo had been giving him grief for a few weeks. The remote had quit responding, and now the car was taking two or three tries to start. He wasn't sure if he had a key problem, an ignition problem, or something worse.

When I got there he handed me the key. The fob side was dead, battery was shot. That explained the remote. But the start hesitation was a different story. I checked the key head and the ignition cylinder, and the cylinder had some wear on it. Not catastrophic, but enough that the blade wasn't seating cleanly every time, which made the read inconsistent.

I decoded the cylinder on site, replaced the worn internal components, and cut a new blade to match what it wanted. Then I programmed the replacement remote head key through the OBD port so the transponder enrolled correctly and the remote functions came back live. One visit, his driveway, done.

He'd called the dealer before he called me. They told him to bring it in, said it could take a day or two depending on what they found, and that he should plan on leaving it. He didn't have a day or two to leave his only car. That part stuck with him. The dealer visit he never took ended up saving him the trip.
