Over in College Estates, I got a call from a guy whose only key for his 2008 Aveo had snapped in the ignition cylinder. Not lost. Snapped. Half of it was still in there.

First thing we did was extract the broken piece. The blade on the Aveo is an edge-cut profile, so a standard extractor kit handles it cleanly without pulling the cylinder. He watched the whole thing from about three feet away, arms crossed, convinced it was going to cost him a cylinder replacement on top of everything else. It didn't.

Once the cylinder was clear, I cut a fresh key from the factory FCC ID blank, matched to his VIN-decoded bitting. Then I connected to the OBD port under the dash and enrolled the transponder chip. The Aveo's system is not complicated, but it does require the right equipment. No shortcut exists there.

The key turned, the car started, and he stood there looking at his ignition like he expected it to snap again.

He had already called the dealer before reaching me. They told him the car needed to come in, and they quoted him the extraction, a new key, and programming as three separate line items. Getting it there without a working key meant a tow. The total was climbing fast. He found me instead, and I was in his driveway.
