A woman was staying at a hotel near Channel Islands Harbor in Oxnard. She had driven in for a few days, parked, and at some point between check-in and the next morning, her only key for her 2007 Aveo stopped starting the car. It would turn in the ignition fine. Engine would crank. Then nothing. Just died immediately every time.
She had no second key. Her husband was back home. She called the dealer first, who told her to have it towed in and that they would get to it when they could.
She called me instead.
I already knew what this probably was before I got there. The 2007 Aveo cranking-but-stalling pattern is the immobilizer doing its job. Key turns, engine fires for a second, immobilizer does not recognize the transponder, car shuts down. The key itself looked fine. No obvious damage. But the transponder inside had lost its pairing, which does happen, and is more common on older keys that have seen some wear.
I met her in the hotel parking lot. Cut a new key to her vehicle right there using the correct blank for the Aveo. Then programmed the transponder through the OBD port. The whole thing took under forty minutes. She turned the key, engine started, stayed running, no drama.
She was surprised it could be done in a parking lot. The dealer wanted a tow plus a wait plus a number that made her wince. She paid a fraction of that, without moving the car.
