How Lincoln MKX Keys Changed Over the Years
1st Generation (Remote Head Key)
This is where security got serious for the MKX lineup. Your key is a chunky remote head unit with a Texas 4D (4D63) transponder chip inside and a standard cut blade that goes straight into the ignition. The PATS immobilizer checks that chip every time you turn the key, and programming is done on-board, which means we handle it right in your driveway without any server connections.
2nd Generation (Flip Key)
Lincoln switched to a sleeker flip key design with a high-security blade and a Texas 4D (4D63) transponder chip. The immobilizer upgraded to PATS II, which requires OBD-II programming and a PIN code we pull through NASTF. Still no push-button start, but the security jumped up a level, so this one needs professional tools to program correctly.
3rd Generation (Smart Key with Push-Button Start)
This is where security got serious in a whole new way. Your MKX uses an ID4D67 chip inside a proximity smart key with a laser-cut emergency blade. Push-button start, Intelligent Access, and SecuriLock (PATS) all working together. Programming requires server authentication through Ford, which means specialized diagnostic software and a live connection to Ford's servers.
Which Key Does Your MKX Use?
A thick key with buttons built right into the head. The metal blade slides into your ignition like a traditional key. Three buttons: lock, unlock, and trunk.
The blade folds into the fob body when not in use. It has a high-security cut pattern that requires a specialized machine to duplicate. Three buttons on the face.
A slim fob that stays in your pocket. Your MKX detects it wirelessly and lets you push a button to start. There is a small emergency blade hidden inside for dead-battery situations.
What to Expect Price-Wise

Us vs. the Dealer
Over 1,000 five-star Google reviews say more than any comparison chart, but here are the numbers anyway.
Common Lincoln MKX Key Problems
Transponder Failure
The Texas 4D chip in your 2007-2012 MKX key degrades over time. After 10+ years, the chip can stop communicating with PATS entirely: key turns but the engine will not start. We test the chip on-site and either clone to a fresh key or cut and program a new one.
Fob Battery Drain
First check on a 2007-2015 MKX remote problem is the CR2032. Remote head and flip key designs draw standby power even in a drawer, so batteries drain faster than expected. Battery checks out, we look for an internal short on the fob board, less common.
PATS Sync Loss
Swapped your battery in Simi Valley over the weekend and now your MKX will not start, theft light flashing? Classic PATS desync, one of our most common 2013-2018 calls. Immobilizer lost handshake with the key during power interruption. OBD-II reprogramming.
Proximity Sensor Failure
2016-2018 MKX owners in Camarillo and Oxnard think the smart key died when the real problem is a failed proximity antenna inside the vehicle. The antenna detects your fob at the handle or start button. We test fob signal first to save key cost.
Can You Program a Lincoln MKX Key Yourself?
Yes, but only if you already have two working keys. You can add a third key using Ford's on-board two-key programming procedure. This programs the remote functions only. If you have lost all your keys, self-programming is not possible and you need a professional locksmith.
Same deal here. With two working keys in hand, you can add remote functions to a new key using the door cylinder cycling method. The transponder chip still requires OBD-II programming with professional tools and a PIN code, so you cannot fully program a key at home.
You can add a new smart key's remote functions if you have two existing programmed fobs. The procedure uses the center console pocket and a specific button sequence. But the transponder and proximity programming require Ford server authentication, so a professional visit is still necessary for a fully working key.

Did You Know?
The Lincoln MKX shared its platform and key systems with the Ford Edge. Ford took the same CD3 architecture, dressed it up with Lincoln's luxury interior and branding, and sold it at a premium. Under the hood of the security system, though, the PATS hardware and transponder chips are identical across both vehicles.
