2015 Lincoln MKX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional
A restaurant owner in the East Area 2 part of Santa Paula called me on a Tuesday afternoon. He had bought his 2015 Lincoln MKX used a couple of years back, drove off the lot with one fob, and never got around to making a spare. That one fob had been his only key ever since.
He dropped it on his concrete driveway. The shell cracked clean along the seam, the emergency blade popped out, and the circuit board was sitting exposed. He wasn't locked out exactly, because the blade still worked the door cylinder, but the smart functions were gone and he had no backup. Zero working fobs.
When I got there I checked the board before assuming the worst. It was intact. No cracked solder points, no visible damage from the fall. That mattered, because a working board means we skip the all-keys-lost process entirely.
I moved the board into a new replacement shell, reseated the CR2032, and cut a fresh emergency blade by decoding the door lock. Then I registered the fob to the car through the diagnostic port and walked every function: touch unlock on both front handles, the start button, lock, unlock, and all five buttons. Everything came back clean.
He went from zero functional keys to two in about 40 minutes. He mentioned the dealer had already quoted him a number that made him put off the repair for a week. What I charged was a fraction of that. If your fob cracked but the board survived the fall, hold onto every piece. It can make the difference between a quick rebuild and a full replacement job.
