A guy in Downtown Santa Paula called me on a weekday morning. He had a 2018 Lincoln MKX and zero working keys. Not a lost-one situation. Zero. He had been borrowing a neighbor's charger to keep the battery topped because he was afraid the car would go completely dark on him. The SUV just sat in his driveway looking expensive and useless.
He had already called the Lincoln dealer. They told him the job required a tow to their lot, a scheduled appointment, and a wait. He did not like any part of that answer, so he started asking around. Someone pointed him to me.
I pulled up to his place with the tools already staged. First thing I did was get into the vehicle using the door lock cylinder and the emergency blade decoded from it. That gets the door open without any fob in the picture. Once inside, I connected my diagnostic equipment at the OBD port, cleared the body control module of all previously registered fob data, and then enrolled the new fobs one at a time. The system has a timed sequence built into the all-keys-lost process, so you sit and wait for it. That is just how the protocol works. You do not rush it.
After enrollment I walked every function. Touch unlock on both front handles. Lock button on the handle exterior. The start button response with the fob in range. The backup slot in the center console, which is there for exactly the scenario where the fob battery dies completely and the car cannot read it wirelessly.
He asked me how long the dealer tow and appointment would have taken. I told him probably two to three days minimum once scheduling was involved. He nodded like that tracked with what they had told him.
He paid a fraction of what the dealer had quoted, and he did not move his car once.
