Over near the Glen Tavern Inn in Santa Paula, a woman flagged me down from a church parking lot. She had a 2010 Lincoln MKX that another locksmith had already touched. She paid full price for a new key, but the car would crank for about two seconds, then die. Classic PATS rejection. The theft indicator on the dash was flashing steady, which tells you the immobilizer never accepted the key into permanent memory.
The other guy told her the PATS transceiver module was fried and left.
It was not fried. He had not completed the full security access sequence. On these 80-bit PATS systems, there is a timed download that takes about 10 minutes of just sitting there while the tool and the PCM talk. If you rush it or pull the connector early, the key data writes to temporary memory and looks good on the first start, then fails on the next cycle.
I used my FO38 Lishi to verify his blade cut was accurate. It was. Connected my IM608 through OBD-II, cleared the partial key data he left behind, and ran a clean PATS relearn with the full security timer. Waited it out. The new key with FCC ID OUC6000022 started the car clean, theft light proved out and went dark.
She had already paid one locksmith for a job that did not work. At least this time the car actually ran when I left.
