I got a call from a parking structure near downtown Santa Paula, late on a Tuesday. The guy was a night janitor, and his only key to his 2012 MKX was gone. Not at home, not in a bag, just gone. He was already thinking about tow trucks.
He didn't have his registration on him. Didn't know what a VIN was. Was about two minutes from calling for a tow to move the car somewhere he could deal with it in the morning.
I walked him through it on the phone. Looked through the windshield, base of the glass, driver's side. He found it. He met me at the structure. I ran the all-keys-lost procedure through the OBD port, which wipes the old key memory and opens the system up to register fresh fobs. Then I built two new Intelligent Access remotes and enrolled them, tested every button, walked both door handles for touch unlock, and had him do a push-button start himself so he could feel it working before I packed up.
He said he had no idea any of this could be done in a parking garage. I told him that's kind of the point.
The dealer was closed. They would have told him to tow it in the morning anyway. He drove home that night from Limoneira-area Santa Paula with two working keys and his registration back in his app where he found it.
