2014 Lincoln MKX
Key Replacement - Save vs Dealer in Ventura County

Q: What exactly is a smart key and how does it work on the 2014 MKX?

The 2014 Lincoln MKX uses a proximity-style smart key system. The fob communicates with the vehicle passively, meaning you don't have to press a button to unlock the door. When the fob is close enough, touching the door handle triggers the unlock. Walk away and it locks behind you. Inside the fob is a transponder that the vehicle security system checks before allowing the engine to start.

Q: How does the dealer price compare to going with a mobile locksmith?

Dealer pricing on a smart key job for a 2014 Lincoln MKX runs high once you add parts, programming labor, and whatever shop fees they attach to the ticket. Owners on the forums have reported walking out of Lincoln dealerships having spent a significant amount for a single fob plus programming, not counting the time waiting for a parts order if they don't stock it.

Q: My 2014 MKX starts fine but the door handle touch unlock stopped working. Is the fob failing?

Probably not the fob. If the vehicle starts normally and the push-button responds to the fob, the transponder side is doing its job. Touch unlock is handled by a separate antenna and sensor in the door handle assembly. That circuit can fail independently. Check the obvious first: dirt or moisture on the handle sensor area can kill the touch response. Wipe it down and test.

Q: I lost both keys to my 2014 Lincoln MKX. Can new ones still be made?

Yes. All-keys-lost is a standard job on this system. It requires diagnostic equipment to clear the existing key memory and register new fobs from scratch. The old keys, wherever they are, get erased and can no longer start the vehicle. One thing to know: the process has a built-in security timer that adds time to the job. Budget about 45 to 60 minutes on site. You'll also need proof of ownership, which is standard practice on any all-keys-lost job.

2014 Lincoln MKX Smart Key Replacement - Fast, Affordable & Professional

Downtown Santa Paula on a Wednesday afternoon. A guy was parked near one of the older storefronts on Main Street after grabbing lunch. He walked back to his 2014 Lincoln MKX, hit the door handle, and nothing happened. Fob was in his pocket. Door stayed locked. He tried the lock button on the fob: nothing. Tried the unlock button: nothing. Called me.

When I pulled up, he had already swapped the fob battery at the pharmacy down the block. Fresh CR2032, correct size, still no response from the door handles. He assumed the fob had failed completely and was already mentally pricing a dealer visit.

I popped the fob open on the hood. The battery was new, but the contact plate on the positive side had a slight inward bow, probably from how the old battery had been sitting. The contact wasn't making clean pressure against the cell. I straightened it, reseated the CR2032, snapped the fob shell closed.

Door handle touch unlock worked on the first approach. Lock button, unlock button, all five buttons tested clean. He stood there for a second looking at the fob like he was waiting for the catch.

There was no catch. The fob was fine. The cut was never the problem. The contact was.

He mentioned the dealer had quoted him a full fob replacement and programming on a previous visit for something unrelated. The number stuck with him. This fix took about twelve minutes and cost him a fraction of that. Not every call needs new hardware.

Lincoln MKX Mobile Service FAQ

Real costs, no dealer surprises

Why is Lincoln smart key replacement so expensive?▼

A few things stack up at once. The fob itself has to be sourced, which costs money before anyone picks up a tool. Then the fob has to be programmed to your specific vehicle through the diagnostic port, because an unprogrammed fob does nothing. On top of that, the emergency insert blade inside the fob has to be cut to your vehicle. The dealer also charges for the key code lookup separately in some cases.
